Pollinating London

by Court Assistant Steve Smith, a Pollinating London Together (PLT) trustee

Court Assistant Steve Smith introduced PLT, which started out as a pan-livery initiative by founding members from the Wax Chandlers and Gardeners, Steve was involved on behalf of the WCIT almost from the start. He opened with some interesting facts: pollinators are responsible for a third of the food on our plates; there are over 1500 pollinators in the UK, our flying insect population has declined by more than 60% in the past 20 years; there are over 250 types of bee in the UK but there is only one honeybee (honeybees are not in decline); some plants depend on specific pollinators for pollination.

Steve then gave a brief history of PLT, the purpose, the PLT team, how he got involved, what he has been doing before talking about volunteer opportunities and benefits and how everyone can get involved. The key message though is pollinators are responsible for a third of the food on our plates so supporting native pollinators is essential. Installing beehives in urban areas is dangerous to the natural pollinators as honeybees take all the food and starve out the natural pollinators such as solitary bees and bumblebees. Steve has written a song to highlight the plight of our pollinators. It was originally aimed at young people, but the message applies to all ages groups.
