Royal Signals Career Workshops

On Wednesday 23 October presenters and mentors from across the Company came together for the latest Royal Signals Career Workshops. Since these were first delivered in 2010 around 750 members of the Corps have attended these events.
The day saw the first presentation of the workshops in a civilian environment thanks to the kind support of Thales in Reading, a Royal Signals Institution (RSI) Partner. This year 35 signallers registered to attend via the RSI, whose Director, Col (Rtd) Joe Cooper, led the co-ordination of the Corps and Thales elements of the day.
The morning started with a short briefing on the work of the RSI following by an overview of the Livery and WCIT by the Master Mr Gary Moore (picture courtesy of Hilary Whicker).

The day was divided into half a day of presentations including “Your Future Career”, CV advice, Interview techniques, starting you own business and 3 presentations from former members now established in civilian careers. The presentations were well received and resulted in some interesting and challenging questions!
During the remaining half of their day, each attendee had an individual mentoring session to help them think about the options open to them as they approach the end of their military career. Over the last 14 years these sessions have been core to our offering with one of the former Corps members in their presentation reflecting on how beneficial they had found the support 9 years ago, and how it shaped their approach to finding the next step in their career.
So far, the feedback from all quarters has been outstandingly positive – albeit the day was just the start, with the mentoring relationships continuing as needed.
Thanks goes to the WCIT team: The Master, Deputy Master, PM Nic Birtles, Mike Day, Paul Excel, Chris Haden, Roy Isbell, Stuart Murdoch, Francis West, Hilary Whicker and Michael Winslow. Additional thanks to the Armed Forces Committee, Careers Panel and Entrepreneurship Panel for their help and support in advertising the day and encouraging volunteers.
