Royal Signals Career Workshops – Retaining Talent in Our Industry

On Tuesday 21 October a team of volunteers from across the WCIT supported our career workshops for Royal Signals leavers. This annual event, run in conjunction with the Royal Signals Institution (“RSI”), has been a jewel in the crown of our affiliation since 2010, with many hundreds of Signallers attending over the years.

This year we were kindly hosted by CGI, an RSI Corporate Partner, at Campus Reading, which provided a great insight to a modern corporate environment. During the day delegates attended presentation covering “Continuing Your Career”, “CV Advice” and “Interview Preparation and Techniques”. We were also joined by three former members of the Corps (Tony Muers, Ross McDuff and Ian Blower) who provided some inspiring and sobering insights from their journeys after leaving the Military.

During the day, each delegate had an initial mentoring meeting to help them start to think about their future careers. We also piloted drop-in sessions covering a CV Clinic, use of LinkedIN and making the transition from Technical to Management.

Feedback has already been positive, not just about the event but also enquiries to learn more about the WCIT and our work within our four pillars.

For the first time the event was opened to our Navy affiliates and was also observed by an RAF representative. So we hope that an event built up over the last 15 years will benefit a wider group in the future.

Thanks go to Col Joe Cooper (RSI Director) for undertaking the administration of the event from the Corps side and, last but definitely not least, to our team of volunteers for making the day a professional, memorable and valuable one for the delegates: Nic Birtles, Jane Kimberlin, Chris Haden, Mike Day, Michael Winslow, Maxine Ricketts, Gordon Walker, Wayne Smith, Peter Charlesworth
