New Golf Season Kicks Off

Fifteen WCIT golfers met on a cold and windy Maundy Thursday morning at Pyrford Lakes Golf Club on April 2nd for a social round to start off the season.

The aim of the day was to have a social round that would blow away some of the winter cobwebs. So, a friendly format was playing format was chosen to encourage players of all abilities.  As the name of the course suggests, there was water on the course. A lot of water. Nobody avoided losing a ball in the water during the round. Indeed, two players reported losing 20 balls between them! This was reflected in the scores with only one group getting better than net par on the day – the three-ball of Brad Day, Dave Robertson and Mark Bridger.

The top three scores for the day were:

  1. Brad Day, Dave Robertson & Mark Bridger: net 68
  2. Peter Cordery & Andy Cobb: 73 (on countback)
  3. Graham Frost & Anthony Faupel: 73

“Why choose a course with so much water?”, you may ask. The reason is that this was the chosen venue for this coming September’s Cito Cup fixture against the Royal Signals. However, the facilities at the club weren’t ideal and the fixture has now been moved to Calcot Park.

Overall, it was a great day. The weather improved with warmer sunny conditions bringing us home. We were also joined for dinner by Past Master Nic Birtles who was unable to play following major surgery. It was good to see him looking so robust and recovering well.  A special thank you to Peter Greenwood for organising the fixture and for getting a pass on his wife’s birthday to play!
