Space Technology Working Group – Space Education and Space for Good – Opportunities and Challenges
18th March 2025 from 6:00pm — 8:15pm • Information Technologists' Hall
Join us on the 18th March 2025 with the Space Technology Working Group as we have an insightful conversation with a unique panel of UK/Global Space industry leaders in the Information Technologists’ Hall.
The global space economy is projected to reach S1.8 Trillion by 2035 (according to WEF/McKinsey) with an exciting myriad of applications such as communications (mobile/remote/inclusive), disaster mitigation/ recovery, defence, semiconductor/drug manufacturing in space … The UK space sector employs 45,100 people and is currently worth over £16.4 billion per year covering rocket science, satellites to earth terminals and devices
We have brought together a unique panel of UK/Global Space industry leaders to inform, engage and inspire on the opportunities/challenges:
🚀 #SpaceEducation and #Accreditation for
- school students
- post school education
- on-going career/professional/personal development
📡 Developing the #SpaceSkills required for the UK to continue to “punch above its weight” … this was identified as a key success factor for the UK Space Industry (worth £16.4bn, 45,100 jobs today) and at the STWG launch event on 17th Feb
🛰️ #SpaceforGood applications such as
- disaster mitigation/recovery
- habitat/wildlife preservation
- providing digital inclusion for communities with poor/no communication coverage
GUEST SPEAKERS:
🎤 Fergus Kirkpatrick – Astro Pi Programme, a collaboration between the European Space Agency – ESA and Raspberry Pi Foundation that gives young people the chance to run their 💻 code in space 🚀
🎤 Sophie Maxwell is Executive Director, Connected Conservation Foundation (CCF) which works to protect wildlife and natural ecosystems, empowering community-led conservation through technology including Space – with the global ambition to protect 30% of the planet by 2030 (..10 million hectares of habitat, conserving 50+ threatened species)
The CCF has so far channelled $12 million to stop poaching, prevent human-wildlife conflict, reduce habitat loss and sustainably manage natural resources for both wildlife and local people (supporting the restoration and protection of over 35 threatened species).
🎤 Dr. Joshua Macabuag FREng MICE co-Founder of Renew Risk revolutionising risk analytics for Renewable Energy … Joshua has first-hand experience across all stages of the disaster management cycle: from insurance and mitigation, to search & rescue and damage assessment (both remote and on-the ground). His particular interest is in:
➡️ disaster risk modelling (cat modelling, defining frequency and severity of losses due to disasters – the work he does Renew Risk) and
➡️ disaster response (search & rescue – the work of SARAID)
🎤 Henny Sands – Head of Telecommunications, UK Space Agency – where he is responsible for delivering the UK’s satellite and lunar comms programmes.
